One of the many ways that newer cars are keeping drivers safer on the road is through auto-dimming mirrors. The blinding sensation that you may experience when driving at night and looking in your rearview mirror at high beams can be extremely dangerous. The function of auto-dimming mirrors is to read light sensors and darken the mirror automatically to reduce the glare.
The technology behind auto-dimming mirrors is quite innovative. There are two sensors that communicate with a microprocessor to detect bright light beams. They initiate a charge that travels through an electrochromic gel. That charge initiates electrochromism, which relies on a series of oxidation-reduction reactions to change the color of the gel in the mirror to a much darker shade temporarily. The gel stays sandwiched between two thin layers of glass.
